The AJS Supercharged V-four 500cc motorcycle was launched in 1935, initially as a roadster. It had chain-driven single overhead cams, front-mounted supercharger. Initially air-cooled, it became liquid-cooled in 1939, adding to its reliability. It won several races, but the war ended its successes and after the war supercharging was outlawed for world championship races.

Developed for the 1939 Senior TT, the formidable supercharged V4 was built to respond to the supercharged Italian and German factory racers dominating the TT and Grand Prix circuits at the time. It was the first machine to lap a Grand Prix course at over 100mph. The parallel-twin blocks were arranged in a 50 degree V-layout with chain-driven single overhead camshafts. The supercharger version lay across the front of the magnesium crankcases.
