Brough Superior SS 100 review
Vying with the American Crocker Twin, the
Brough Superior SS 100 is arguably the most collectable and valuable of all road legal motorcycles. George Brough learned the trade from his father who produced
Brough Superior motorcycles, and went on to build and race machines which were the finest machines of the day. Most famous of BS owners was Lawrence of Arabia who owned seven and rode them like there was no tomorrow.
Brough Superior used engines by JAP and Matchless, among others, and also produced some quite remarkable designs of their own. Although George Brough produced several several memorable exotic motorcycles, such as the Austin engined four with twin rear wheels and the Golden Dream of the immediate pre-war period, it is the
Model Superior SS 100 that the marque is remembered by most enthusiasts.
The 1932 motorcycle displayed in this picture therefore represents the half-way mark in its life of this famous motorcycle. Probably the best known of Brough Superior devotees was Colonel T E Lawrence, Lawrence of Arabia. Between 1922 and his death in 1935, Lawrence owned seven Broughs of which six were Model SS 100s and his writings contain many passages referring to the pleasures of riding these big twis. More
