Shinya Kimura is the guru of customizing, mastermind and creator of "Zero style" and Zero Engineering custom company and roadchopper in Japan.
Kimura now lives in the USA, in Azusa, California, where he was dragged by Brad Pitt, who is a fan and buyer of Shinya's bikes. Shinya Kimura separated from "Zero Engineering" and opened his own company called "Chabbot Еngenireeng", where he creates and enjoys life.
Customheads might know that school of customizing in the Land of the Rising Sun has its own style (as all Japanese) and special unique charm, which is based on national traditions. There is even such term as "Samurai Choppers" or "banzai bikes".
Zero Engineering are creators of Samurai Chopper's, which started their professional experience in 1992 under lead of tireless enthuziast of Zero-style in customizing Shinya Kimura. The start was quite modest: they opened a modest work-shop in Okazaki and begun customizing of bikes, but with a glance to national tendencies. And the tendencies were such: Japanese bikers admired American "Harleys" and Italian classics.
Many local customizers made customs based on Harley's engines and decorated chassis with piecis of their own. Well, guys from Zero Engineering learned fast using an old-school stylistics. But their vintage transormed in something completely obscure, which was then called "Japanese school". However, last companie's achievements lead to the name "Zero-style"...
During its activity the company built nearly 30 luxury motocycle. Each new bike was evaluated higher, than previous one. The price for last works exceeded $ 40 000. No wonder that in 2009 the company moved to Las Vegas and feels fully comfortable there. Filigreed rework of every detail, performed with Japanese perfectionism put them on the same level with Arlen Ness and West Coast Choppers. Today Shinya Kimura is esteemed as classic and old-school guru.
All developments of the company differ by single massive design. Engine S&S 1600 ccm or 1852 ccm is used as power unit. Though, sometimes they install Sportster engines into their extraordinary frames. 5-gear transmission is ususally Harley's, but a bit upgraded. Sometimes engineers use Baker units. 74 inch front fork is decoration of them models. Mufflers, aluminium fuel tanks and all other "attachements" are made for each model. Nothing special at first sight, but the final product amazes with its elegance and grace. There are also retro and muscle bikes in company's collection.
Shinya Kimura founded Zero-style inspired by classic constructions. His style is individual, daring and extraordinary, the result of which is one of the most unique motorbikes. Old parts of most donor-bikes Kimura uses in his creations, in which they are exposed, first of all, to esthetic rework.
You could say that every custom by Kimura, covering with his fingerprints, is built from scratch. Everything from designing to asembling is done by Kimura himself. However, his motorcycles are more than just layout. They are not "show", but "go". Every of his Zero-bikes are made for riding. Even though, motorcyclesproduced in Las Vegas, USA are not built by Kimura himself, they have his aura.
Shinya's motorcycles performed in retro style became so popular on the West in 2004 that his excitet fans, including Hollywood stars, had to wait in line up to 4 years.
That's why he moved to the USA in 2005. There he opened Zero Engineering branch. But year after he had an argument with his partners. So, he moved to Los Angeles and opend his own company called Chabbott Engineering.
Now Kimura lives in the USA, where he made a legendary career in custom-building, which some call a "functional art". Now he works in his workshop in Azusa.
Kimura, who owns custom labels Zero Engineering and Chabott Engineering, is founder of "zero-style" in custom-building. You don't have to find out, what style this is, just look at his bikes and ypu'll know the ropes.
In most cases zero-style motorbikes are performed in retro style, "springer" front fork, old H-D power unit and manufactured to 1984. Wheels must have spokes, no plastic. But no limit on shiny plates.
Ducati 999R is performed (except front fork) in zero-style, produced by Zero Engineering. It is notable for its functional minimalism and vintage, having a bit of steampunk in its design, rich in polished and open parts of engine, thransmission and other units.
Since 2004, Shinya participates in Calendar Motorcycle Show, which he uses as introduction for his latest custom version.
His retro Panhead Harley, which won the show in 2005, was bought by Brad Pitt. Since then Pitt purchased range of Shinya's customs Triumph and Ducati, which were introduced in 2009.
Custom Hoon by Shinya Kimura is a champion of zero style. As Chicara Nagata, Kimura considers a motorcycle as object of art.
