Occurrence of 4-stroke engine
The very first 4-stroke engine came into being due to hard work of Nicolaus Otto. It was invented in 1876. This was quite innovative operational principle of mechanical combustion engine at that time. Some experts call it “Otto cycle”. We’re speaking of 4-stroke operation of power plant, which is used in practice nowadays. Note, that this type of engine, aside motorcycles, was also installed on many cars, tractors, grass-mower etc.
The four-stroke engines have many advantages. But still, there are some disadvantages either in comparison with two-stroke engines. Nowadays almost every vehicle freighter or light motor cars are equipped with 4-stroke type of motor.
Cycles as of 4-stroke engine, so of its analogue consist of 4 separate stages. The first one is injection. Then the compression process and fuel ignition are performed. And then goes fuel output. At every stage the piston makes one move, when the crankshaft rotates only twice during whole cycle.
Description of four-stroke engine
The work of power plants mentioned above starts with fuel injection into cylinder. During this the piston moves down (bottom dead center). At next stage of 4-stroke engine operation compression of air-fuel mixture takes place.
During this process, the piston moves to upper dead center. At that point, the cylinder valve closes under heavy pressure. At this time fragment the air-fuel mixture is ready for ignition process. The 4-stroke motor of motorcycle continues operation after the plug produced the spark and ignited the air-fuel mixture. After the ignition gas, formed in combustion chamber, expand and push the piston down. In such way it casts back.
Then gas released in exhaust system. The 4-stroke engine of motorcycle or car provides an exhaust valve opening. At this stage the piston actively moves up. It throws out all products formed after fuel ignition from cylinder.
Features of four-stroke engine
This power plan has many differences from 2-stroke one. First, even with one cylinder configuration it is capable to produce no small power in addition to higher economical operation. Due to such work, the engine doesn’t lose even a small part of air-fuel mixture, which is typical for 2-stroke motor of car or motorcycle. Still, the 2-stroke power plants are more powerful, but the 4-stroke is more efficient. The installation of 2-stroke engine is correlated with small space. If there is not much place on the frame of your bike, it is not wise to install 4-stroke engine.
Also, 4-stroke power plants are rarely installed on small motorcycles, compact motor-boats, chain saws or so important to us motorized tools, because this tech is already saving. But the four-stroke engines are installed on large vehicles, generators and other mechanics. They are cooled with liquid or air flows.
The 4-stroke engine has following advantages:

- remarkable economical operation;
- high cleanliness of exhaust;
- no need in complicated exhaust system;
- small noise intensity during operation of engine;
- no need in manual preparing of petrol oil mixture.
